r/SomebodyMakeThis Alternatives: Where to Post or Find Ideas Nobody Built

If you use r/SomebodyMakeThis to post or find ideas nobody has built, the nearest alternatives are r/AppIdeas and r/Startup_Ideas on Reddit, plus Post your build ideas, which needs no account and gives each idea a build prompt. IdeasAI and Starter Story solve different problems: AI volume and proof from built businesses. Subreddits give you discussion; a board gives you structure.

What job does r/SomebodyMakeThis do, and where does it fall short?

The name states the job: someone describes a thing they want to exist and hopes a person with the skills makes it. It is a public pile of ideas that people lack the time or skills to build, and that is also what this site is. So the useful question is not which is better but which job you are doing today.

A subreddit is a feed of text posts with comments, run under rules set by its moderators. Reddit’s own pages would not load for our automated check on 28 October 2026, so we did not read the three communities’ sidebars and we do not quote their rules or member counts. Read each sidebar before you post.

  • What a feed does well: replies. Strangers can say the idea already exists, name the product, or ask the question you forgot to answer.
  • What a feed makes you do yourself: structure. There is no fixed category list, no required fields and no ready build prompt, so a reader has to turn your post into a brief.
  • What to check on any forum: whether you can edit or delete a post later, and what the community rules say about posting the same idea elsewhere.

Which sites are the best alternatives to r/SomebodyMakeThis?

This site publishes this page and lists itself first, so weigh that. It is first because, for someone who wants a builder to find their idea without joining anything, it asks for the fewest steps. The other five are described only with what each states about itself or what its name makes plain.

01 Post your build ideas

A free public board where you post an app idea with no account, and every idea gets a generated build prompt.

Source of ideas
People posting ideas they will not build themselves
Cost
Free to browse and post
Account needed
No account, no email; you type a name
Why it is first here
Same job as the subreddit, with fixed categories, no sign-up and a prompt on every idea

A post has a name, one of 31 categories, a title of up to 90 characters, a description of up to 4000, and optional pricing thoughts and contact. Each idea page then generates a build prompt containing the whole description, with buttons to open it in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and you can paste it into Lovable or another builder. A builder can add a link under “Already built this?”.

The limits matter more here than the strengths. There are no comment threads, so you get likes and dislikes instead of advice. Publishing is permanent, so a poster cannot edit or delete. The board is small, so fewer people will see your idea than on a large subreddit. Ideas are unverified, build links are self-reported, and posting gives no protection for the idea. Post an idea only if you are happy for it to stay public.

02 r/SomebodyMakeThis

The subreddit this page is about: people post things they wish existed and others reply.

Who it suits
Someone who wants replies, and is comfortable posting under a Reddit account
Build prompt
None seen; posts are free text
Check first
The sidebar rules, which we could not read

Stay if discussion is what you came for. A reply thread can tell you that the idea exists, who sells it and what people complain about, which a board entry with no comments cannot. If you are a builder looking for a project, the same threads show you what people say they would use.

Use it alongside a board, not instead: post to the subreddit for feedback, then use the replies to rewrite the idea more precisely before you decide where else to put it.

03 r/AppIdeas

A subreddit whose name says it is for app ideas specifically, rather than any made-to-order product.

Who it suits
Someone with an app, not a service or a gadget, in mind
Build prompt
None seen
Check first
The sidebar rules, which we could not read

The name narrows the topic to apps. If your idea is an app, a focused audience can give more specific replies than a broad one; if it is not, it may be off topic. Read the rules to see.

As with any feed, expect to do the sorting yourself. Our guide to finding app ideas explains how to screen what you read.

04 r/Startup_Ideas

A subreddit whose name points at startup ideas rather than apps alone.

Who it suits
Someone whose idea is a business, with customers and revenue in mind
Build prompt
None seen
Check first
The sidebar rules, which we could not read

A startup-focused forum is where you would expect questions about who pays and why, which is a useful stress test if you were about to post a feature as if it were a business. A reply that asks you to name the customer is worth more than ten that say “nice idea”.

It suits a founder who wants business pushback more than a developer who wants a project to build. For the latter, the startup idea guide is a better start.

05 IdeasAI

A site that says its startup ideas are generated by AI without human involvement, with swipe voting from visitors.

Who it suits
A reader who wants volume and no posting at all
Cost
No paid plan found on its page; sponsor-funded
Documented limit
The site says many ideas might not be perfect

It is not a place to post. It is a place to read ideas that no person had; the site says they are generated by a model and trained by visitor votes. Each has a “Build it” button.

It suits you if the real problem is finding something to build, not getting yours built. See IdeasAI alternatives.

06 Starter Story

Interviews with founders, plus a database of built projects that report revenue.

Who it suits
A builder who wants to see what already earns before picking
Cost
Database free per its homepage; email required
Angle
Built businesses, not unbuilt ideas

The opposite end of the pipeline: instead of ideas nobody built, you read about things that were built and grew. It helps you judge which kinds of products are small enough for one person.

It will not tell you what is missing from the market. Combine it with a feed or board to find an unbuilt idea of the same size. More in Starter Story alternatives.

“None seen” means we did not find the feature, not that it cannot exist. Check each subreddit’s own rules for what a post may contain.

How do you write an idea post that a builder can act on?

A post that says “an app for dog owners” gets likes and no build. A post that names the person, the task and the first screen gets a builder who can picture a weekend. The same text works as a subreddit post, as a board entry or as the start of a prompt.

Idea post template
Title: [Who] can [do one thing] without [the pain they have now]

Who has the problem: [one sentence, specific person]
What they do today: [the workaround, with the tool they use]
What the first version does: [three things, no more]
What it does not do yet: [two things you are leaving out on purpose]
How it could earn: [one line, or write “no idea”]
Platform: [web, iOS, browser extension, command line]

Run the draft through the Idea Checker first; it reads only the text you type and points out missing detail. It is not advice and it does not predict whether the idea will work. Then pick where it goes, and remember that on this board a post cannot be edited or deleted afterwards.

How did we compare these, and what is the bias?

This site is the publisher and listed itself first. To limit the bias we read only each product’s own pages on 28 October 2026, quote no prices for others, and stated plainly where we could not read a page. Reddit’s pages returned nothing usable, so every statement about the three subreddits comes from their names and from how a subreddit works in general, not from their rules.

The order after the first entry follows closeness to the same job: posting ideas, then reading them, then learning from built businesses. It is not a quality ranking, and we did not test every feature.

Which should you use?

  1. You want strangers to pick the idea apart: post in the subreddit that fits (app, startup or made-to-order) and read the replies.
  2. You want a builder to start without a conversation: put it on the board, where the prompt is generated for them, and accept that it is permanent.
  3. You want to build something, not post something: skim the board by category, then use the free vibe coding project picker if you cannot choose.
  4. You want volume with no effort: IdeasAI.
  5. You want to see what earns: Starter Story.

Doing two is normal. Test the wording on a subreddit, then post the sharpened version to the board. See also other places to find ideas and a list of side project ideas if you want to browse without joining anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good alternative to r/SomebodyMakeThis?

For the same community style, use r/AppIdeas or r/Startup_Ideas. For posting without an account and giving builders a ready build prompt, use Post your build ideas. For reading ideas without posting, use IdeasAI. Each trades something: Reddit gives discussion, the board gives structure, IdeasAI gives volume.

Can I post an app idea without making an account?

Yes, on Post your build ideas: you type a name, pick a category, add a title and description, and publish. There is no account or email. The trade-off is that publishing is permanent; you cannot edit or delete the post afterwards, only the admin can remove it if it breaks the rules.

Will anyone actually build my idea if I post it?

Nobody can promise that. Posting makes an idea visible and, on this board, gives builders a prompt to start from, but there is no guarantee and no claim on what gets built. A specific idea with a named user and a small first version is easier for a builder to scope than a broad one, so write yours that way.

Is it safe to post an idea publicly?

Public means anyone can copy it. The board’s own rules say that if an idea is worth protecting, you should not post it. Posting here gives you no claim on what others build. Post ideas you are happy to see built by someone else, and keep anything you plan to build yourself private.

Are Reddit idea subreddits free?

We could not read Reddit’s pages when we checked, so we cannot state its costs or each subreddit’s rules; confirm in the sidebar. Posting on Reddit happens under a Reddit account, whereas Post your build ideas needs only a name and costs nothing.

Post your build ideas publishes this comparison and lists itself first. Facts about other products were checked on their own websites on the date shown above; prices and features change, so confirm on their sites before you decide. About the publisher.
