Lovable vs Bolt: tokens, credits, hosting and code export compared

Lovable and Bolt both generate a hosted full-stack app from a description. The main difference is how they meter work: Lovable charges credits that vary by task, while Bolt gives a monthly token allowance. As of October 2026 Bolt Pro is USD 25 a month for 10M tokens and removes Bolt branding, and Lovable's free plan gives 5 build credits a day. Both sync code to GitHub, so test export early.

Is Lovable or Bolt better?

They are close competitors with similar pitches: chat with an AI, get a working app with a database and hosting. The practical differences are the billing unit, the free-plan limits and the extras around hosting and teams. The facts below come from Bolt's pricing page and help center, Lovable's pricing page and Lovable's documentation, read in October 2026.

If neither feels right, Lovable alternatives lists more, and Bolt vs Replit puts Bolt against a wider platform.

How do Lovable and Bolt price their plans?

This is the part that surprises people. Lovable and Bolt measure work differently, so a plan price tells you little until you know what a typical build consumes.

Bolt prices by tokens, the units a language model reads and writes. Its pricing page lists:

Bolt plans, October 2026
PlanPriceTokensKey inclusions
FreeUSD 01M tokens a month, 300K a dayPublic and private projects, unlimited databases, website hosting, Bolt branding on websites
ProUSD 25 a month, billed monthly10M tokens a month, with rolloverYour own domain, no Bolt branding, expanded database capacity, choice of database provider, newest AI models, connectors and MCPs, SEO boosting
TeamsUSD 30 a month per member, billed monthlyFrom 10M tokens a month per memberEverything in Pro plus centralized billing, access management, admin controls, private npm registries
EnterpriseCustom annual contractPriced by consumptionSSO, audit logs, dedicated infrastructure, compliance

Lovable prices by credits. Its FAQ says the free plan gives a daily grant of 5 build credits, up to 30 a month, plus a monthly grant of 20 Cloud credits. Paid plans (Pro, Business and a custom Enterprise plan) add a monthly credit balance on top of the daily grant. One balance pays for building, hosting on Cloud and AI features inside your app. Plan Mode costs 1 credit a message and other messages vary: “Make the button gray” is 0.50 credits, “Add authentication with sign up and login” is 1.20 and a landing page with generated images is 1.70. Monthly plan credits expire two months after they are issued, and credits are not refundable. Lovable's dollar prices change often, so check lovable.dev/pricing; the Lovable pricing guide explains the credit maths.

  • Tokens punish long conversations. In a token-metered tool, every message carries the history. Start a fresh chat for a new feature when the tool allows it.
  • Credits punish big requests. In Lovable, a vague request that touches many files costs more than a precise one.
  • Both reward a tight first prompt. The build prompt guide shows how to scope one.

What backend and hosting do you get?

Bolt describes Bolt Cloud as the backend infrastructure around your project: hosting, databases, user management and authentication, integrations and SEO optimization. Every plan, including Free, lists unlimited databases and website hosting. On Free, published websites carry Bolt branding, and removing it requires Pro, which also adds your own domain. Bolt's docs list integrations for Supabase, Stripe, Netlify and Google sign-in, so you can pair it with services you already use.

Lovable's documentation says each project includes a frontend, backend, database, authentication and integrations, all backed by editable code. It publishes to a lovable.app address, and a custom domain is available on paid plans. The pricing FAQ says that for most smaller apps the cost of publishing and keeping the app running is minimal and covered by the included grant, while apps with significant traffic may draw on your credit balance. For a Supabase-based setup, see the Lovable and Supabase guide.

Can you export the code or switch tools?

Both support GitHub. Bolt's docs describe connecting a GitHub repository to back up code, sync commits automatically and work across branches, and say you can bring an existing GitHub project into Bolt or start in Bolt and create a new repository. Once the code is in GitHub you can publish with Bolt hosting, the Netlify integration or another service. Lovable's Git sync documentation describes export and two-way sync with GitHub for backup, collaboration and deployment, and its overview adds GitLab and Bitbucket. Its FAQ says you own your code.

Bolt's help center also lists an Import from Lovable page under its integrations, which makes it the easier destination if you start in one and want the other. Read that page for the steps and limits before you move a project you care about.

How do you compare them fairly?

Run the identical prompt on both free plans and record three numbers: what the first build used, what one small change used, and whether the result runs after export. Pick a small idea from the developer tools category, for instance a cron expression explainer, or copy the generated prompt from any idea on the board.

Prompt for a two-builder test (hypothetical example)
Build a small web tool that explains a cron expression in plain English, and the reverse.

User: a developer who cannot remember cron syntax.

One job: a text box takes a cron expression and shows a plain-English sentence plus the next five run times. A second box takes a sentence like "every weekday at 9am" and shows the cron expression.

Screens: one page with two panels.
Storage: none.
Out of scope: accounts, saving, scheduling real jobs.

List assumptions first. Build it. Then tell me how to run it and what you did not test.
  1. Send the prompt unchanged to both tools on their free plans.
  2. Write down the credits or tokens used for the first build.
  3. Ask for one change: add copy-to-clipboard buttons. Write down the usage again.
  4. Connect GitHub in both and open the repository.
  5. Keep the tool whose output you understand and whose usage you could predict.

If you have an idea of your own that you will not build, you can post it on the board and someone else may take it on with the generated prompt.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lovable or Bolt cheaper?

Bolt Pro is USD 25 a month for 10M tokens, as of October 2026. Lovable prices by credits and changes its dollar plans often, so check lovable.dev/pricing. The cheaper tool is the one that uses less of its allowance on your project. Test the same prompt on both free plans and compare usage.

Does Bolt have a free plan?

Yes. Bolt Free gives 1M tokens a month with a daily limit of 300K, public and private projects, unlimited databases and website hosting. Websites carry Bolt branding on the free plan. Pro, at USD 25 a month, adds your own domain, removes the branding and lists 10M tokens a month with rollover.

Does Lovable have a free plan?

Yes. Lovable's free plan gives a daily grant of 5 build credits, up to 30 a month, plus a monthly grant of 20 Cloud credits. That is enough to test an idea. Paid plans add a monthly credit balance, and custom domains are available on paid plans.

Can I move a project from Lovable to Bolt?

Bolt's help center includes an Import from Lovable page, so a move is documented. Because both sync with GitHub, you can also move through a repository. Check the import page for steps and limits, and test with a small project first, since backend data and settings may need separate handling.

Which is better for non-coders?

Both are aimed at people who describe an app in plain language. Lovable's credit costs per prompt are easy to see in its history, and Bolt's token allowance can feel more abstract. Neither removes the need to review what is built. Try one small project in each and keep the one you understand.

Do Lovable and Bolt build mobile apps?

Both are positioned as builders for websites and web applications. Whether either can produce a native app for the app stores is something to confirm in its documentation before you start. If a mobile app is the goal, also look at Replit, which lists a mobile app project type in its Agent flow.
