Claude Code vs Gemini CLI: what changed in 2026, and what to compare now
Claude Code and Gemini CLI are no longer a like-for-like pick for most people. On June 18, 2026, Google stopped serving free individual users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers through Gemini CLI and pointed them to Antigravity CLI. Gemini CLI remains for organizations with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses. For an individual, the real comparison is Claude Code, which needs a paid Claude plan, against Antigravity CLI, which has a free tier.
Is Gemini CLI still the free alternative to Claude Code?
No. Most comparisons you will find rank Gemini CLI as the free option next to Claude Code. That advice is out of date. Google’s announcement on its developers blog, dated May 19, 2026, says that on June 18, 2026 Gemini CLI and the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions would stop serving requests for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and for people using Gemini Code Assist for individuals free of charge. Google is replacing it with Antigravity CLI, part of its agent-first development platform, Google Antigravity.
The Gemini CLI repository on GitHub now opens with the same message. It says Gemini CLI is designed for Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses and Code Assist for GitHub on Google Cloud, with no free tier or Google AI plans. It also says the tool is not tuned for the Gemini 4 series, and tells readers not to use it to benchmark Gemini models. Google’s announcement adds that Gemini CLI stays accessible through paid Gemini and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform API keys.
| Your situation | Google’s terminal agent for you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Individual, free | Antigravity CLI | Google developers blog, May 19, 2026 |
| Individual with Google AI Pro or Ultra | Antigravity CLI | Gemini CLI README on GitHub |
| Company with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise | Gemini CLI, unchanged; Antigravity CLI is also available | Google developers blog |
| Developer with a paid Gemini API key or Vertex key | Gemini CLI, listed as a legacy route | Gemini CLI README |
So this page compares Claude Code with both Google tools, and says which one applies to whom.
What is Claude Code, in one paragraph?
Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation describes an AI-powered coding assistant that builds features, fixes bugs and automates development tasks across multiple files. It runs in a terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and on the web. Most of those surfaces need a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account, and the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains versions also support third-party model providers. Project instructions live in a CLAUDE.md file, and skills, hooks and MCP servers extend what it can do. It uses Claude models. Individuals need Pro, Max or Ultra, from USD 20 a month, or USD 17 a month billed annually; the free Claude plan does not include it.
What are Gemini CLI and Antigravity CLI?
Both are terminal agents from Google. They differ in age, license and audience.
01 Gemini CLI
Google’s open-source terminal agent for Gemini, now maintained for enterprise Gemini Code Assist workflows on Google Cloud.
- Command
gemini; run it once withnpx @google/gemini-clior install with npm, Homebrew or MacPorts- License
- Apache License 2.0
- Who it is for now
- Organizations with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise, Code Assist for GitHub, or legacy paid API and Vertex keys
- Customization
- GEMINI.md context files, custom commands, checkpointing, MCP servers
The README lists code understanding and generation across large codebases, building apps from PDFs, images or sketches, and running non-interactively in scripts. Releases ship on a weekly schedule, with preview, stable and nightly channels. If you used Gemini CLI before June 2026 on a free login, that login no longer works with it.
02 Antigravity CLI
Google’s terminal-first surface for Antigravity agents, built in Go, with subagents running in the background.
- Command
agy- Features
- Subagents, skills, hooks, plugins, MCP and slash commands such as /agents and /config
- Free tier
- The Individual plan is USD 0 a month, with unlimited tab completions and command requests and basic weekly limits
- Paid routes
- Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra for higher limits; Google Cloud for organizations
Google says Antigravity CLI shares one agent runtime with the Antigravity 2.0 desktop app and that it keeps Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents and Extensions, which become Antigravity plugins. It also says there is not one-to-one feature parity with Gemini CLI at launch. A migration guide covers converting extensions, context files, skills paths and MCP configuration, and the first launch of agy offers to import existing Gemini CLI settings. See the Antigravity pricing page for the current plan list.
How do Claude Code and Google’s terminal agents compare?
| Claude Code | Antigravity CLI | Gemini CLI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | Anthropic | ||
| Command | claude | agy | gemini |
| Free to start | No; needs Pro, Max, Ultra or an API account | Yes, on the Individual plan with weekly limits | No for individuals since June 18, 2026 |
| Models | Claude models | A variety of agent models, per Google’s pricing page | Gemini models, with Gemini 4 not tuned |
| Instruction file | CLAUDE.md (can read AGENTS.md) | Rules and skills; a migration guide covers Gemini CLI context files | GEMINI.md |
| Parallel agents | Subagents and parallel agents | Subagents with an /agents panel | Not listed in the README |
| Other surfaces | VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile, Slack | Antigravity app, IDE, extensions, SDK | Terminal; IDE extension for Code Assist |
| License | Not described as open source | Not described as open source | Apache 2.0 open source |
The Antigravity column rests on Google’s product and pricing pages, and Claude Code’s on Anthropic’s overview. Neither company publishes a head-to-head, and independent benchmark scores change with every model release, so this page does not claim that one writes better code.
Which one should you use?
- You want to try a terminal coding agent for free: Antigravity CLI. Claude Code has no free plan, and Gemini CLI no longer serves free individuals.
- You already pay for a Claude plan: Claude Code is included in Pro, Max and Ultra, so the marginal cost is zero until you hit the usage limit. See Claude Pro vs Max for how those limits scale.
- You already pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra: Antigravity CLI is the route Google points that subscription to.
- Your company is on Google Cloud with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise: Gemini CLI remains supported for you, and Google says your access is unchanged.
- Your company wants to run Claude through its own cloud account: Claude Code supports third-party providers in the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains.
- You want to read and modify the agent’s source code: Gemini CLI is Apache 2.0 licensed. Claude Code and Antigravity CLI are not described as open source on their official pages.
If you are unsure, spend an afternoon on each free or included route with the same task and keep notes. A tool you enjoy using for the first hour usually wins on your own project, because the differences that matter, such as how it asks for approval and how clearly it reports what it changed, do not show up in a feature table.
How do you move from Gemini CLI to Claude Code or Antigravity CLI?
Your project knowledge lives in a context file, so moving is mostly about that file. A short prompt does most of the work. Start the new tool in your repository and give it this brief.
Read GEMINI.md in this repository. Create the equivalent instruction file for this tool (CLAUDE.md for Claude Code; keep GEMINI.md untouched either way). Rules: - Keep every build, test and lint command exactly as written. - Keep architecture notes and naming conventions. - Drop anything that only makes sense for Gemini CLI itself, and list what you dropped. - Do not invent commands. If a command is unclear, ask me. When done, run the project's test command once and tell me if it passes.
Anthropic’s documentation says Claude Code can read an AGENTS.md file in place of a CLAUDE.md, so if your repository already follows that convention you may not need to convert anything. Check any MCP servers you configured: both Claude Code and Antigravity CLI support them, but the configuration format differs. Google’s migration page lists the schema changes for Antigravity.
If you are choosing a tool because you have an app idea and no preference yet, browse the ideas on the board. Every idea has a generated build prompt you can paste into any of these three tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini CLI free in 2026?
Not for individuals. Google ended free individual use of Gemini CLI on June 18, 2026 and moved free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers to Antigravity CLI, which has a free Individual plan with basic weekly limits. Gemini CLI itself stays free to install as open source, but it needs a Code Assist license or a paid API key to serve requests.
Is Antigravity CLI the same as Gemini CLI?
No. Antigravity CLI is a newer tool, written in Go, that shares one agent runtime with the Antigravity desktop app and runs multiple agents in the background. Google says it keeps skills, hooks, subagents and extensions but does not match Gemini CLI feature for feature. Its command is agy, and it can import Gemini CLI settings on first launch.
Does Claude Code have a free plan?
No. Anthropic’s pricing page lists Claude Code as included in Pro, Max and Ultra and not in the free Claude plan. Pro is USD 20 a month, or USD 17 a month billed annually. You can also use Claude Code through an Anthropic Console account billed at API rates, or through a supported third-party provider.
Is Claude Code open source like Gemini CLI?
Anthropic’s official documentation and pricing pages do not describe Claude Code as open source, and this page does not claim it is. Gemini CLI is published under the Apache License 2.0 on GitHub. If an open-source licence matters to you, read each project’s licence file directly before you adopt it.
Which is better for a large codebase, Claude Code or Gemini CLI?
No official source ranks them, so neither can be named better. Anthropic says Claude Code works across multiple files and understands your whole codebase. Google’s Gemini CLI README says it can query and edit large codebases but also says it is not tuned for newer Gemini 4 models. Test both on a real repository, using the same task and the same branch.
